Green'up socket installation guide

Installing a Green'up socket is an excellent solution for charging an electric vehicle safely and reducing charging time by up to 2 times compared to a standard outlet.

Installing a charging point with a power output of less than 3.7 kW can be done by yourself or by a qualified professional. This guide takes you step by step through the installation of this reinforced socket, specially designed by Legrand for charging electric and plug-in hybrid cars.

1. Prepare the electrical installation

Before installing your Green'up, it is essential to check your electrical installation to ensure a secure and compliant connection.

First, check that your electrical panel complies with current standards and is sufficiently sized to support the additional load.

The Green'up socket requires a dedicated circuit with a 20A residual current device and a type F residual current circuit breaker to ensure optimal protection.

Use a cable with a minimum cross-section of 2.5 mm² for the connection. If there is a significant distance between the socket and the electrical panel, it may be preferable to opt for a cross-section of 4 mm² to avoid any voltage drop.

Before carrying out any electrical work, it is essential to cut off the power at your electrical panel.

👉 Tip: If you have any doubts about your installation, do not hesitate to consult a qualified electrician to check the conformity of your electrical network.

2. Connect the Green'up socket

Once the preparation is complete, you can proceed to connect the socket.

Choose a suitable location for the installation, preferably one sheltered from the weather and close to where you park your vehicle. This reduces the cable distance needed to easily connect it.

Secure the socket bracket to the wall using anchors suitable for your type of surface (concrete, brick, placo, etc.).

Then connect the electrical wires:

  • Phase (red or brown) on the corresponding terminal.
  • Neutral (blue) on the neutral terminal.
  • Earth (green/yellow) on the grounding terminal.

Once the connections are made, tighten the terminals securely to avoid overheating due to poor contact.

⚠️ Caution: Carefully check the connection diagram supplied with the socket to avoid any connection errors.

3. Install the reinforced socket box

After connecting the wires, it's time to install the outlet box.

Place the plug in its protective casing and secure it securely. Make sure the assembly is tightly closed to prevent water or dust from entering.

If you plan to install it outdoors, choose a sheltered location or add a protective cover to extend its lifespan.

💡 Good to know: The Green'up plug is equipped with a magnet that recognizes a specific cable, allowing it to reach a charging power of 16A. With a standard cable, charging will be limited to 8A.

4. Turn the meter back on and test the outlet

Once the outlet is installed, it's time to turn the power back on and test that it's working properly.

Return to your electrical panel and reconnect power to the circuit for the outlet. Make sure the circuit breaker doesn't trip, which could indicate a short circuit or improper wiring.

Then plug in your Green'up-compatible charging cable and connect it to your vehicle. Check that charging starts correctly and that the charging indicator light on your car indicates that power is being supplied.

If charging does not start or if you notice a problem, check the connections again or consult an electrician.

5. Recharge on a Green'up reinforced socket

The Green'up allows for faster and more efficient charging than a conventional electrical outlet. Here are some tips for using it properly and optimizing your charging.

→ Take advantage of off-peak charging

Many electricity providers offer reduced rates during off-peak hours (usually at night). You can program your vehicle to start charging only during these hours, via your vehicle's dashboard or app.

→ Adjust the amperage

If your vehicle allows manual adjustment of charging intensity, it is recommended to adjust the amperage according to your needs. By default, a Green'up socket operates at 8A with a standard cable and up to 16A with a compatible cable.

The higher the amperage, the faster the charge will be.

Here are the different possible charging powers depending on the amperage chosen:

Amperage (A) Maximum charging power (kW)
6A 1.3 kW
8A 1.7 kW
10A 2.2 kW
12A 2.6 kW
16A 3.7 kW

💡 Note: To reach 16A, a Green'up compatible cable is essential.

→ Check the installation regularly

Make sure your plug and cable are not overheating or showing signs of wear. Clean the connectors regularly to ensure good conductivity and prevent loose connections.

Installing a Green'up socket in a co-ownership: what you need to know

If you live in a condominium, installing a Green'up reinforced socket requires a few specific steps.

  • Obtain the condominium's consent: Before any installation, you must inform the condominium manager of your project. Thanks to the right to take, the condominium cannot oppose your request, unless there is a legitimate reason.
  • Check the electrical infrastructure: A qualified electrician can check whether your parking lot already has a suitable power supply or whether an additional connection is necessary. In some cases, an individual metering system will need to be set up so you can only pay for what you use.

Installing a Green'up plug allows for faster and safer charging of your electric vehicle. By following this guide, you can ensure a reliable and optimized connection. If in doubt, contact a qualified electrician.

Remember to check that your electricity subscription is sufficient to support the charging of your vehicle in addition to the use of other household appliances.

Favor charging during off-peak hours if you have this type of subscription and regularly check the condition of your socket and cable to ensure safe and long-lasting use.
